In the Battlefields
(Maarek Hob)

A Film by Danielle Arbid

film still In the war-torn Beirut of 1983, a family struggles not only with nightly bombing in the city, but also with the battle taking place inside their own home. They live in a well-to-do neighborhood of the city, but the father's gambling threatens to undermine the family as it destroys their finances. The father's brother and sister have lost patience with him, and his pregnant wife spends long days in solitude as her husband digs the family ever deeper into debt. The family and the church pastor confront the father, but his addiction is far beyond anyone's control.

Lina is the twelve-year-old daughter, a rebellious girl who seems oblivious of the war in the city as she tries to escape the desperate battle between her parents. The girl is captivated by her aunt's 18-year-old maid, Siham, who hates her job, and despises her employer. Siham's relief is in the time she spends with Lina, taking her along on clandestine dates with her boyfriend, showing her how to kiss and behave with boys.

As the two girls' confidence in each other grows, Siham unwisely confides her intention to escape, not realizing that Lina will be shattered at the thought of losing her friend and confidant. To keep Siham from leaving, Lina tells her aunt about the plan. Enraged, her aunt locks Siham in her room.

An urban war zone brings many families together, but in this story it inspires betrayal, frustration and passion. Although the war in Beirut is not mentioned, the final montage shows the gray streets filled with graffiti, war-torn buildings, and mounds of barbed wire. Lina's father has committed suicide, and Siham has made her escape. On the day of her father's funeral, Lina chases frantically after Siham, through the war-ridden streets of Beirut.
